1924

The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Patrick Henry Cold Storage Co. Inc. was held at its office in Koehler at 2 p.m.

1949

The local 1949 March of Dimes campaign raised $3,500. The chair was Horace G. Dyer, and the treasurer was Edward S. Bailey.

The name has been decided for the new elementary school being built beside City Park: Patrick Henry.

1960

The Mary Cabril Smith Chapter of the Children of the Confederacy meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance to the US Flag and a salute to the Confederate Flag, followed by a luncheon. Several new members received their membership certificates and the group enjoyed an interesting program on Robert E. Lee at West Point.

Presentations of closed circuit educational TV, the latest innovation in education, were being held. Three local teachers were briefed on these techniques and equipment has been installed in Patrick Henry School. The presentations were free and designed to brief both the public and the educational community on this rapidly expanding enhancement of a quality education.

The Board of Directors of the Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce today announced its unanimous support of the city sewer expansion program in the forthcoming bond election. The program would take 7 years to complete and would entail borrowing approximately $2,300,000 through the issuing of 20-year bonds. A list of qualified registered voters (freeholders) who own real estate in Martinsville was published, to clarify who was eligible to vote on the above issue.

1974

The Martinsville-Henry County Women’s Club was doing its monthly scrap paper drive, so they had receptacles places at Winn-Dixie, Cooper and Ratcliff and Kroger stores for people to drop off paper.

1999

The community learned that Lowe’s was coming, to locate behind the “new” Walmart. Work was expected to begin in 1999 to level the ridge behind Walmart including by bulldozing and blasting.
