Feb. 7 through time

1924

Central Martinsville business sites were sold at public auction on Thursday, Feb. 7. It was the Brown’s Warehouse property across from the D&W station, divided into 27 lots, some from Franklin Street to Davis Street, one on Davis Street and six fronting an alley between Brown’s Warehouse and J.W. Booker’s store. Brown’s Warehouse was described as a substantial brick building in excellent condition and could be divided into rooms for different purposes.

1949

It was reported that in January 1949 28 building permits had been issued in Martinsville, totaling more than $65,000. That included for seven new houses: H.R. Campbell on Jefferson street, H.B. Banks Pannill on Orchard street, Ad Hairston on Fayette street, S.E. Fishel Jr. on Graves street, John M. Weber on Rives Road and E.P. Murphy on Virginia street. A permit also was issued to the Henry County board of supervisors for jail improvements totaling $5,000.

1960

Local girls high school basketball teams included the Stuart Kittens and the Critz Lassies.

1974

1999

Martinsville Ford Body Shop at 201 Commonwealth Blvd. was offering a “Valentine’s Special” – Complete Paint for $675, with a free ’99 Ford Classic calendar.
