100 Years ago – 1924
A new building for City Pressing Club was being constructed on Fayette street, opposite the W.A. Brown Tobacco Company plants. It would be a one-store brick building 25 by 80 feet. It would be ready by Jan. 1, and when it opens there the company’s name would change to The Stulz Dry Cleaners and Dyers.
75 years ago – 1949
One thousand dollars was received by the Henry County Tuberculosis Association during its first few days of Christmas Seals sale, which would continue until Christmas.
1960
Local Christmas Cheer organizers were worried. Already 250 families had applied for holiday assistance, and they expected a total of between 400 and 500 people to apply, but so far only $85.52 had been donated to the charity. The more recent donations had been $1 from Eugene Stone, $5 from Mrs. Louise Rimmer and $8.52 from the Golden Age Club of First Baptist Church.
50 years ago – 1974
William B. Franck cast the tie-breaking Board of Supervisors vote, in favor of an ordinance to register bingo games. The annual permit would be $50 to run bingo or raffle games. The Supervisors also passed a taxicab ordinance that regulated the licensing, driver certification, vehicle condition and fees for all cabs in the county.
The Jack’s Creek Covered Bridge was officially turned over to the Patrick County Historical Society from the Patrick County Board of Supervisors. It was one of only two covered bridges in Patrick County. It spanned the Smith River on Va. 615 just west of Va. 8. The other one was the Bob White Covered Bridge on Va. 618 in Woolwine.
25 years ago - 1999
The SPCA was conducting a stuffed animal collection drive to distribute stuffed animals to needy area children through Christmas Cheer.
