100 Years ago – 1924
An auction was held for real estate: Two store rooms in the Sutherlin Block, one occupied by the Underselling Store, and the other by Levy’s Bargain Store - terms, 15% Cash, 15% 90 days, balance in 1 and 2 years; house on Cleveland Avenue, with a private alley, fine garden and large outhouse suitable for garage or other purpose – terms, 1-4 Cash, Balance 1, 2 and 3 years; a 25 X 130 foot business lot on Bridge Street, adjoining the Bulletin’s building, with a 15-foot alley in the back – terms, 1-4 cash, balance 1, 2 and 3 years.
A diphtheria prevention clinic was held at Bassett High School for school children and children from 2-6 years old. The Schick Test was given to determine susceptibility. The Toxin Anti-toxin treatment was given to those deemed vulnerable to catching diphtheria.
75 years ago – 1949
High Street Baptist Church observed Educational Week, with music by the High Street Jubilee Singers, the Usher Board, the Canary Harmonizers, the Senior Choir and then the Junior Choir. Topics included how to improve Sunday School, religious movies and Youth of the New Day.
1960
Attorneys Claude E. Taylor and R.R. “Jim” Young had an office together at 10 Bridge St. (the building behind/adjoining The Ground Floor), and Taylor also was City Attorney. Taylor left both positions to move to Florida. His wife and their four children had moved to the family cottage in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, the previous winter; in October 1969, Mr. Taylor visited them, then decided to move there, thus resigning his roles in Martinsville.
50 years ago – 1974
Henry County Plywood installed a $225,000 air pollution control system that also cut the plant’s consumption of heating oil. Edward Gravely was the plant engineer.
25 years ago - 1999
Veterans of Company F, 187th Paraglider Infantry Regiment, 11th Airborne Division, which served in the Pacific during World War II, held their annual reunion in Martinsville. They included Jasper Hankins of Axton.
American of Martinsville received $600,000 from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund for ongoing expansion efforts.
