City Health Officer R.M. Wilson reported the area’s first contagious disease in 2 months: spinal meningitis. Victim Gladys Martin, 7, of Collinsville, was being treated at Martinsville General Hospital. The Martin home was the first one quarantined in the area since Nov. 5, when the last case of measles was reported; the last case of scarlet fever was recorded on Nov. 4. Since that time, a few cases of chicken pox had been reported, but homes were not quarantined for that disease.

Freezing rain topped off the 18+ inches of snow which had accumulated on the Blue Ridge Parkway. “Normal” life was at a standstill on this frigid Thursday as schools, industries, businesses and bus services closed until at least the following Monday.
