City Manager Kent Matthewson went to Danville to see how they handle natural gas, to learn ways to work natural gas in Martinsville. The natural gas committee in Martinsville included Councilman E.A. Sale and Rieves S. Hodnett.
1960
Ronnie Kallam, a Drewry Mason High School junior, won a national 4-H contest at a demonstration in Syracuse, N.Y. The topic was how to prepare chicken for the market. He demonstrated proper cutting.
50 years ago – 1974
At Akers’ Supermarket, whole fryer chickens cost 39 cents per pound, lean ground beef cost $2.29 for 3 pounds and three loaves of Hyde Park bread cost $1. Shoppers received S&H Stamps they could collect and redeem later for merchandise.
25 years ago - 1999
About 40 people attended a candidates forum at Morning Star Holy Church, where the Rev. Tyler Millner was the pastor. Speakers included Del Barnie Day, D-Meadows of Dan, and Ridgeway District Supervisor H.G.Vaughn. They cited a study that said that the area had gained 3,695 jobs since June 1993 and lost 2,927 jobs in the same time.
