100 Years ago – 1925

Ad in the Henry Bulletin: “We Repair All Makes of Talking Machines – N.J. Waugh, Danville, Va., ‘Just Around The Corner.’”

75 years ago – 1950

A coal shortage had swept the nation, but Martinsville industries would not be handicapped by it, because they could use run-of-the-mine coal to heat their boilers. Plenty of that type of coal was available, Virginia Emergency Fuel Commission Local Coordinator R.M. Wilson announced. It would be harder to get stoker coal.

1961

Playing at the Roxy, Friday and Saturday: “They Used A Weapon No Badman Could – SEX! Glenn H. McCarthy presents ‘Five Bold Women.’” Also “3 Came To Kill,” plus “Cartoon Show Saturday 1 p.m.” and “Drive-Ins Open Fri. – Sat. – Sun.”

50 years ago – 1975

The Bassett Country Club was under construction and nearly finished. The 19,291-square-foot building cost more than half a million dollars. Co-chairman Jane Spilman described the style as cozy country living.

25 years ago - 2000

Tultex officially was in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which is a filing for protection from creditors while a company reorganizes. However, the company’s attorney, Bruce Matson, said in U.S. Bankruptcy Court that the company was liquidating assets, and there would not be any more manufacturing in Martinsville.
