100 Years ago – 1924

Children in the Martinsville Grammar School who had been registered with the school nurse were vaccinated against diphtheria at school by a doctor, under the auspices of the Red Cross Chapter and State Board of Health. Children younger than school-age or those in school who had not been registered could get the vaccinations at the school for 50 cents.

75 years ago – 1949

The Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsored a Dale Carnegie Course, which opened in the evening at Martinsville High School. The 17-week course was taught by Prof. E.K. Bennett of the Dale Carnegie Institute.

1960

The Republican headquarters opened at 42 E. Church St. John Redd Smith was the City-County party chairman.

50 years ago – 1974

Restaurants and entertainment: Putt-Putt Golf Course, Laurel Park Plaza; 220 Drive-In Theatre showing “Gator Bait – Half Animal, All Woman – Wild as the swamps that spawned her, she pumped HOT BLOOD and HOT LEAD!”; Dutch Inn restaurant; Janleen’s Steak House and Ice Cream Parlour in Laurel Park Plaza; Pizza Den at 147 E. 25 years ago - 1999

The Virginia Department of Health requested that people cease all contact with Blackberry Creek in the Stones Dairy area, because samples it had collected and analyzed showed high levels of contamination in the water. It wasn’t clear where the fecal contamination had originated, but the creek was near the Fairway Acres Sewage Treatment Plant.
