100 Years ago – 1924

In the Henry County Fair, prizes had been awarded ($2 for first and $1.50 for second) in the following Grasses categories: Alfalfa hay, orchard grass, clover, tall meadow oat hay, timothy hay, herd’s grass, Sudan, soya beans and sorghum. Winners included Clara Barrow, Byron Hensley, S.H. Eanes, G.W. Barros, Theo. Barrow, Buford Minter, Mrs. A.D. Davis, Geo. Webster, H.L. LaPrade, Tom Hairston, Homer Weaver and Harden Hairston.

75 years ago – 1949

It was the first night of the Community Theater’s showing of “My Sister Eileen.” Directors were Miss Frances Wells and Jack Harnsberger.

Bolin Thompson Jr. and Everett Thompson fell 50 feet when a scaffold boke at Fieldale. Everett got a compound fracture and Bolin got only bruises. They had been near the top of the powerhouse for the bleachery at Fieldcrest Towel Mill.

1960

More than 200 Methodist pastors, lay leaders, board and commission chairman from the Danville District attended training in Martinsville, at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, from 1:30-9 p.m. The host pastor was the Rev. W.N. Raney, and the district superintendent was the Rev. John A. McKenry Jr.

50 years ago – 1974

At King’s Family Center – 8 by 10 color portrait by Colorama, 48 cents: One special per family, one special per person, group $1.00 per person, 50 cents handling on all portraits, parents must pick up portraits, photographed individually $1.95.

25 years ago - 1999

Local Nationwide insurance agents were Junior Lee Lawless, with an office at The Dye Plant Road; Lynn Prillaman Mabe, 3289 Virginia Ave.; Brad Parker, at 1103B Brookdale St.; and Roy L. Thomas at 711 Starling Ave.
