100 Years ago – 1924

A joint revival service of the Christian, Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian Churches was held at the Baptist Church.

75 years ago – 1949

A final push would be made to raise the rest of the money needed to build a new hospital for black patients in Martinsville, Victor Tucker told the Martinsville Junior Chamber of Commerce. Around $60,000 had been spent on the hospital so far, and another $23,000 pledged toward its completion.

1960

Bids opened for the construction of the new West End primary school.

In the week before, 8-year-old Billy Saunders of Collinsville won the prizes at a turkey shoot. This week, his older brother, Larry, 10, and his father won in six out of nine shots in a shoot sponsored by the Stella Ruritans. The Ruritans invited Billy back the following Saturday and offered him a free shot to see if he could live up to his initial performance.

At their regular meeting, the board of directors of Patrick County Memorial Hospital Inc. voted to change the name of the new hospital from “Patrick County Memorial Hospital Inc. to R.J. Reynolds-Patrick County Memorial Hospital Inc. This was a result of recent pledges totaling $175,000 received from members of the Reynolds family as well as the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.

50 years ago – 1974

At Bob White’s Chevyland Used Parts and Salvage, 220 North at Villa Heights, you could get V-8 motors for $50 and up, dual line 4 Barrel Holley carburetors for $30 and bucket seats for $25 and up.

25 years ago - 1999

Patrick Community Hospital filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. That would allow the hospital to remain operating for the following 120 days while it devised a financial reorganization plan.
