100 Years ago – 1925

75 years ago – 1950

A committee appointed by the Henry County Board of Supervisors voted to buy six two-way radios and broadcasting equipment from the Motorola company for Henry county police officers. The committee, which included a man from Roanoke and two technicians from WMVA, heard presentations by several experts before making the decision.

50 years ago – 1975

The three founders of the Retail Merchants Association of Martinsville and Henry County were honored at a testimonial dinner at the Holiday Inn: Abe Globman, Elma Hedgecock and Ewell Holt. Other charter members were Phillip Hodnett and R.G. Atkins.

Anthony Trevior Martin, 18, of Bassett was killed when the car he was driving collided with a garbage truck owned by Sanville Garbage Service.

25 years ago - 2000

Students at Mount Olivet Elementary School raised $8,389 at a Jump Rope for the Heart event for the American Heart Association. The top money-raisers were Ryan Gravely, Brittany Shelton, Wade Dove, Hannah Shrader, Robbie Agee, Magen Richardson and Crystal Clowers. P.E. teacher Melissa Blair was in charge.
