J.F. Floyd at Burge’s Old Stand in Martinsville sold sugar for 6 ½ cents to customers who bought 100 pounds of sugar.

75 years ago – 1950

Mrs. J.R. Pyle of 505 Monroe St., Martinsville, was the winner of a fire and steam attachment in the Betty Crocker Contest held by Bondurant Furniture Co. on the corner of Main & Clay streets. She guessed that a piece of material had 28,080 dots (it had 27,900).

50 years ago – 1975

Lawrence Severt, the son of Eliza and Jim Severt of Corn Tassel Trail, was running the seven-day, 150-mile ultramarathon in the Sahara Desert. A month later, he would be graduated from medical school with degrees in neurology.
