100 Years ago – 1924
Mrs. B. L. Marshall, 202 Moss St., endorsed Doan’s Pills in an advertisement: “Doan’s Kidney Pills are a standard kidney remedy in our family. I think there is nothing better for a lame back than Doan’s. I highly recommend them. When troubled with kidney complaint, I was relieved through the use of Doan’s Kidney Pills.”
75 years ago – 1949
Furniture sales were going strong. Bassett Furniture Industries stock increased from $10.50 to $13 a share, and stock from American Furniture jumped from $1.90 to $2.75, just in the few days of the furniture market.
Rives S. Hodnett, vice-president of Burch-Hodges-Stone Inc., was elected president of that firm. He filled the vacancy left by Paul R. Stone, who had died on June 7.
Someone broke into the chicken house of James C. Eanes of 554 Dillard St. and took 16 chickens.

Krazy Bargain Center on Fayette Street had a big sale: boys’ shorty pajamas, 2 pairs for $1.50; girls’ baby doll pajamas, 2 pairs for $1.50’ men’s white socks, 6 pairs for $1; ball point pens, 10 cents; men’s sport belts, 50 cents; boys’ genuine white buck oxfords and loafers, $2; artificial flowers, 6 for $1.
50 years ago – 1974
Marie Saul Wray, 23, of Bassett, and her 2-year-old daughter, Robin Michelle, were killed in a two-car wreck near Bassett.
First United Methodist Church’s teenagers and adults conducted a Summer Fun free play school.
25 years ago - 1999
Crestar was re-opening its Church Street office after a renovation. As part of the promotion advertising the reopening, it held a drawing with prizes being a $250 Kroger gift certificate, a $100 Belk gift certificate and a Coleman cooler camping set.
