100 Years ago – 1924

The Underselling Store held a Going Out of Business sale. Dress ginghams were 5 cents a yard; 50 cent coupons for purchases of $5 or more were distributed; boys pants, valued at $1.50, were sold for 80 cents; boys’ union suits, valued at 75 cents, were sold for 44 cents; men’s silk hose were sold for 39 cents a pair, and cotton hose for 14 cents. Anyone living out of town within a 50-mile radius would be reimbursed his gas bill or railroad fare as long as they spent $15 or more.

75 years ago – 1949

Martinsville postal receipts throughout 1949 were growing each month, with the local office reporting that May receipts totaled $12,590.38, an increase of $863.24 over May 1948 figures.

1960

Tobacco allotment measures had begun. Between mid-June and July 1, about 630 tobacco farms would be reported. Henry County Agricultural Stabilization Committee Manager L.D. Law Jr. announced that farmers should have around the farm someone who could assist the ACS reporter when he arrives to measure. All measurements would have to be done before a producer would be issued his marketing card.

50 years ago – 1974

K-Mart had a Super 9 Sale: panty hose, 3 for 99 cents; bags of Chuckles jelly rings or slices (candies), 4 for 99 cents; woven willow baskets or chairs, $6.9; metal ice cube tray, 99 cents; and, for 9 cents each: pack of six marbles, 1 oz. plastic model cement, 4 oz. Wonder Magic bubbles, plastic bubble pipe, bag of 29 balloons, modeling clay.

25 years ago - 1999

Tuesday night was Ladies Night at the Flying Dutchman Lounge, with a DJ and music. Wednesday nights were “Karaoke America.” A DJ also played music Thursdays through Saturdays. The free food each night was: Mondays, pizza; Tuesdays, tacos; Wednesdays, hot chicken wings; Thursdays, peel & eat shrimp.
