100 Years ago – 1925
A baseball meeting was held in the rooms of the American Legion Post to make plans to organize a baseball team for Martinsville for the upcoming season. Dr. J.P. McCabe was the chairman of the meeting. He, Grady Moore and Brunfield Reade formed the committee. A game already had been arranged for May 15 in Martinsville, against the team of the Virginia School for the Deaf and Dumb of Staunton.
75 years ago – 1950
The Henry County Tuberculosis Association sponsored a mobile X-ray machine sent by the State Health Department. X-rays were given free at the Southside Fire Station for a few days. Since the X-ray program had started in Henry County, 6,984 chest X-rays had been taken to this point. In Bassett, 1,055 of the X-rays were taken.
50 years ago – 1975
Chatmoss Village was the first community in Henry County to get into the Sheriff’s Department’s Neighborhood Watch Program. The citizens association, which represented 60 homes, agreed to earmark $400 of its dues to payments for street lights. The program’s aim was to prevent burglaries by improving locks on doors and windows and encourage neighbors to keep their eyes on each other’s homes. Benjamin Gardner was the Chatmoss Community Council president.

The Henry-Martinsville Health Department gave free anonymous testing for AIDS every Tuesday night from 5-7:30 p.m.
