100 Years ago – 1925
A man who gave his name as Bryant and again as Spencer, who claimed to be from Winston-Salem and Reidsville, was arrested on charges of passing worthless checks. He had been staying at one of the local hotels for some time. The newspaper claimed he was not adept in the business because he was nabbed easily.
75 years ago – 1950
Furniture makers had just returned from the furniture markets in New York and High Point, which had closed the day before, and they projected that sales would be strong at least through the spring and perhaps longer. They also had reported strong demand at the Chicago market.
1961
Warren J. Baker, the vice-president of the National Fire Protection Association of Boston, presented a plaque in Martinsville recognizing the City as national grand award winner in the 1960 Fire Prevention Program. The presentation was held at the Community Recreation Center on Cleveland Avenue.
50 years ago – 1975
A plumbing crew had men working on Spruce Street, and the men put up signs that read “Slow: Men Working. Speed limit 45 miles per hour.” Interesting, considering that the normal speed limit on that stretch of road was 30 miles per hour.
Eddie Lee “Shanghai” Thomas, the accused murderer of Mrs. Sallie Davis Aliff and her four children, was ordered to Central State Hospital in Petersburg to undergo mental tests.
The Henry County School Board approved the purchase of 12 new school buses at a price of $167,000 which had been bid by Bob White’s Chevyland. That purchase would replace old buses to maintain the county’s fleet at 144 buses. The fleet of buses traveled 7,000 miles each day to bring 11,200 students to and from school.

Hooker Printing Inc. in the Patrick Henry Mall advertised for an opening for an experienced two color pressman for 19-inch format.
