100 Years ago – 1924
A guy wire or other support roof used in the construction of Hooker-Bassett Furniture Company’s facility gave way, and five men working on it fell with the beams. Injured were: J.R. Patterson of Martinsville, broken ribs and dislocated shoulder; M.H. Vernon of Martinsville, severe cut to the head; Roy Miller of North Carolina, several bruises and sprained wrist; Harvey Johnson, Spartanburg, bruised hip; and a fifth man, not hurt too badly and able to return to work after a few hours.
75 years ago – 1949
Mrs. Geneva Harrison of 60 Fayette St., Martinsville, was elected Virginia Grand Chief of the Pythian Sisters at the Pythian state convention in Richmond. There were 104,000 Pythian Sisters in Virginia at that time.
Joe D. Stultz of 11 Chatham Heights had grown turnips that were too big to eat; one of them was 3 pounds and 14 ounces.
1960
Over the prior year, the United Fund issued 505 orders of emergency relief: 353 for food, 75 for medicine, 43 for fuel, 15 for clothing and 19 for miscellaneous supplies and services.
The Hi-Y program was active, with 145 boys at Fieldale High School enrolled, and 180 students at Martinsville High School. The program’s goal was to encourage moral, social and spiritual development.
50 years ago – 1974
The Henry County Board of Supervisors set Nov. 21 as the date to open bids on the construction of new county administration building on Kings Mountain Road. They also toured the Henry County jail which was nearly finished being built, with expected completion Nov. 1. (That jail was torn down the third week of September 2024.)
25 years ago - 1999
The body of Maria Soledad Dillard, 41, of Axton was found in a car submerged in the Smith River.
