100 Years ago – 1924

More than 100 people attended the two-day South Piedmont District convention of the Christian Church, held at Broad Street Christian Church. The local pastor was Rev. C.M. Wales.

75 years ago – 1949

The wet and warm weather was causing brown rot to destroy the peach crop in Henry and Patrick counties.

Pope Pius XII ordered a major ex-communication of all militant Communist Roman Catholics.

1960

The owner of Pete’s Stag Café on Broad Street was arrested and released on bond in connections with charges of violation of state labor laws: failure to keep employer records of a female employed and permitting a minor to be employed without certificate.

J.D. Bassett celebrated his 94th birthday in his room at Martinsville General Hospital, joined by three of his children, Mrs. T.B. Stanley, W.M. Bassett and J.D. Bassett Jr.

This notice in the Bulletin’s Stroller column: “Passing over Clearview Drive the other day, we noted an unusual sight for Martinsville. The framework of a small geodesic dome, one of those newfangled igloo shaped structures usually covered with aluminum, is rising near the trailer community there.

50 years ago – 1974

Kathy Hylton Anthony taught baton classes Thursday evenings at Bassett American Legion Post No. 11 on Blackberry Road in Bassett.
