John A. and Victoria Gilbert were run out of town on charges of running a disorderly house in Martinsville. They had 10 days to leave town and could not return to Henry County for 3 years, or they’d be put in jail for 12 months. The charges came from a raid the previous Saturday, at their home on Highland Street. Police also arrested another 8 people there: three convicted on vice charges, two convicted on disorderly conduct, two cases dismissed and one yet to be tried.

Two hundred more students than usual enrolled in Patrick Henry Community College, thanks to the Trade Act. Normally they’d have to wait for the June session to start classes, but PHCC created a “mini session” so they could start school as soon as the benefits became available. Trade Act benefits supported displaced workers to be educated for other jobs and careers.

Family Medical Center opened at 315 Hospital Drive. It was made possible through a $125,000 grant from the Virginia HealthCare Foundation to help pay salaries, and a second grant would be used for capital needs.
