Martin Processing Co. Inc. moved into its new $300,000 plant by the Smith River and on Route 682 between Fieldale and Stanleytown. The company had a year-long contract with one of the leading carpet manufacturers in the nation to take all the nylon carpeting fiber they could dye. The company recently had developed a process by which No. 501 DuPont carpet nylon was stagger-dyed so that, when woven into carpets, it gave no specific design. The process involved the use of several colors, alternated in varying widths along each strand of nylon thread. Julius Hermes was the vice president and secretary-treasurer.

Collinsville Presbyterian Church held the first services in its rebuilt sanctuary, 14 months after the church building had been destroyed by fire. Frith Construction did most of the work, and church members chipped in when possible. The fire happened on Nov. 15, 1998. The church was rebuilt with $700,000 from insurance money. Don Walker was the chairman of the property committee and oversaw much of the process, putting in full-time hours in the beginning, and then settling down to working about 20 hours a week on it. The new church building got a couple of perks the older one did not have, such as a steeple and stained glass windows.
