75 years ago – 1949
A survey showed how much money was being spent on large projects for Martinsville: street program, $42,000; sidewalks, $30,000; water and sewer, $126,500; electric construction for a power sub-station on the former Townes property on Broad and Maple streets, $165,000; prison farm, quarry, $5,000; Scuffle Hill and Union street project, $25,000; miscellaneous, $6,500.

One hundred fifth Henry County children boarded buses headed for Holiday Lake 4-H Camp in the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest, due to return the following Saturday.
50 years ago – 1974
The returns for recycling aluminum went up from 10 cents to 12 cents per pound, from Danville Distributing Co. That company had a receptacle at the Central Plaza Shopping Center, staffed the first Saturday mornings of each month. It was noted that most can collectors back then were parts of school ecology clubs, but some turned in aluminum cans to raise money personally, such as 13-year-old Darlene DeHart of Tanglewood Drive, who earned $7 that way to buy shavings for her gerbil cage.
