Walter L. Main’s circus came to town. It featured such famous equestrian stars as The Seven Riding Lloyds; Miss Hazel Hickey, owner, trainer and rider of champion horses; Master Maurice Colleano, the Australian somersault rider; and the Hockum family of society Equestrians.
75 years ago – 1949
The Flori Roberts line of cosmetics was for sale at Globman’s at the cosmetics department on the street level: “Discover everything from foundations to powders, from eye make-ups to lipsticks, plus total treatment for all types of skin. It’s here and now for you – so come see how really beautiful black can be. Make-Up Base, $5.50; Face Powder, $5.50; Radiance Blusher, $5.50; Lipstick, $2.75; Anti-Oil Lotion, $5.50; Op-Tints Eyeshadow, $3.00; Moisturizer, $4.00.

Walt Wilson (telephone ME 2-9080) was conducting a drive for used Boy Scout uniforms, to give to Boy Scouts whose families could not afford to buy them. There were 1,300 Boy Scouts in Martinsville and Henry County.
50 years ago – 1974
Imperial Savings & Loan offered 5.25% interest on a passbook account. The S&L was at 33 Spencer St., Martinsville.
Shoe World on 220 North in Collinsville, next to King’s, offered their normally $8.97 slingback shoe for $5.90.
25 years ago - 1999
Courthouse Days were held at the former Henry County Courthouse. Some area residents dressed in clothing from the late 1800s and early 1900s and put on a mock trial on the case of a drunk man, Bushrot Figgins, played by Carl deHart, who had stolen a horse.
