100 Years ago – 1925
The Henry Confectionery in the Henry Hotel Building sold: Elizabeth Arden Toilet Goods, magazines and papers, boxed and loose candies, tobaccos, cigar and cigarettes, and it had a fountain service.
75 years ago – 1950
It was Good Friday, and the Martinsville Bulletin, “At the suggestion of a well-motivated group of Martinsville women,” published no crime news on its front page. The intention was that “it may have some influence in the observance of a prayerful and deeply effective Easter season.”
50 years ago – 1975
Operation Baby Lift ended on a large-scale basis. Over 4 days, 1,700 orphans were flown out of Southeast Asia to the United States and other countries. After April 7, children were brought out in smaller groups.
It was Keep Virginia Beautiful Week, and volunteers were outside picking up trash. In Henry County, a crew of four men began their new jobs picking up trash, starting with along Kings Mountain Road; their pay was funded through October with $13,000 in state emergency employment funds.
25 years ago - 2000
Piedmont Arts hosted the 21st annual Virginia Watercolor Society exhibit, and internationally known painter and art juror Judi Betts presided.
