American Furniture announced plans to build a $75,000 addition, 75 feet wide and 158 feet long, and three stories high.
50 years ago – 1975
At JC Penney, 6’X9’ rugs cost $23 and 9’X12’ rugs cost $33; misses polyester pant suits cost $14.99; misses polyester pants cost $3.99. The store was in Patrick Henry Mall.
25 years ago - 2000
Former Cable 6 talk show host Bob Sharp, 43, received a suspended prison term on a Dec. 14 conviction of welfare fraud. He was sentenced to 2 years in prison in Martinsville Circuit Court, but the time was suspended and he was put on 3 years probation.
It wasn’t much of a candidates forum: The audience only had four family members, Realtor Rod Berry and one reporter. The candidates were Vice Mayor Gene Teague, Ronald Stone, David Gilbert, Nancy Carter and Ronald Ferrill. Councilman Bruce Dallas did not attend. The forum was held at Albert Harris Intermediate School.
