1960

The Civitan’s Club continued their plans for the 1960 Miss Martinsville-Henry County Beauty Pageant to take place at Bassett High School on June 3 with the finals in Martinsville High School auditorium the following night. Members would be allotted blocks of the $1 tickets to sell.

Leatherwood Creek had receded somewhat after the recent heavy rains had sent it over its banks, covering part of Route 777 to Chatmoss. Blue Ridge Soil Conservation District would be considering a $700,000 watershed project to address the situation.

California enacted the first law requiring catalytic converters for automobiles.

50 years ago – 1974

The Women’s Auxiliary of Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County presented their annual Top Hat Revue Friday and Saturday nights in the Martinsville High School auditorium. Proceeds were used to buy audio-visual equipment for the hospital. The equipment would serve as a means of communicating new procedures and techniques to hospital personnel.

25 years ago - 1999

People were buying up lottery tickets like mad as the prize had raised to $190 million.
