100 Years ago – 1924
At a Saturday meeting of the Henry County organization of the Tobacco Growers Association at the courthouse, the following representatives were elected: P.H. Reed, A.C. Minter, C.S. Turner, J.F. Wilson, R.W. Jones, W.H. Carter, S.H. Hooker and G.L. Mitchell.
75 years ago – 1949
This Ad: “6 cents – Get Twice As Much in Pepsi’s BIG Bottle! Pepsi tastes just twice as good – goes just twice as far – gives you twice as much! Pepsi Bottling Co. of Danville, Va.” The illustration shows a 12-ounce bottle which includes the text “2 Full Glasses of Pepsi.”
1960
The Fine Arts contest of the Virginia Federation of Women’s Clubs was hosted at Andrew Lewis High School in Salem. Mrs. Barbara Zimmerman, representing the Martinsville-Henry County Women’s Club, won first place in woodworking and first and second place in the embroidering division, as well as being runner-up for first place in the Vogue Sewing Contest.
50 years ago – 1974
Salaries for Henry County teachers with no experience:1972-73, $7,000 and 1973-74, $7,200; with 18 years experience, $9,956 in 1972/73 and $10,504 in 1973/74. The School Board was requesting increases in salary to range from $500 per year for new teachers to $604 for those more experienced.
25 years ago - 1999
More than 1,000 people turned out for the Sportsman Club’s Eighth Annual Easter Egg Hunt and Cookout. Bruce Dallas was a club member and a Martinsville councilman. Casey Porter’s 16-month-old daughter, CaDasha Porter, was one of the raffle prize winners.
