100 Years ago – 1925
There were four Hamiton Theatres: In Martinsville (showing “Western Fate” and “The Sea Hawk”), Bassett (showing “Gerald Craston’s Lady” and “Go and Get It”), Fieldale (“Gerald Craston’s Lady” and “Go and Get It”) and North Bassett (“Go and Get It”).
75 years ago – 1950
The State Highway commission announced that $100,000 had been allocated for the widening of Route 220 south from Martinsville to Ridgeway in the next year. Also, another $150,000 was pledged for the reconstruction of the road between Martinsville and Stuart, in addition to the 1950 allocation of $200,000.
50 years ago – 1975
FC Income Tax Service, on Hwy. 57 between Stanleytown and South Bassett, offered rates from $4 with 24-hour service and personal property tax forms done free. Office hours were from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays.
25 years ago - 2000
VF Knitwear donated a 45-foot trailer to the Henry County Fire and Rescue Association to use in training. Rodney Howell was the county fire marshal then.
