1925

The Kiwanis Club voted to meet once a week, over lunch at the Henry Hotel, rather than the twice monthly it had been doing.

1950

Thornton’s Bakery on the corner of Fayette and Moss streets offered decorated cakes for occasions such as wedding, birthday and anniversary for 90 cents a pound, ordered through your neighborhood grocer.

1961

The Henry County School Board awarded a contract to Stanley H. Clark Construction of Martinsville for an eight-room addition to John Redd Elementary School in Collinsville.

1975

Martinsville firemen to the rescue: they rescued Mrs. Edith Taylor’s cat, Musette, out of the top of a very tall tree in her yard at 12 Starling Ave. The cat ran up there after being chased by three big dogs. (That’s the brick house across from the YMCA, next to the apartments.)

Two records were set for most electricity used by local customers of Appalachian Power Co.:  3,539,000 kilowatts at 9 a.m., then topped an hour later to 3,607,000 kilowatts. The previous peak was on Dec. 16, 1974.

2000

Vice Mayor Gene Teague was one of the hundreds of people who were laid off from Tultex. He had worked there for 16 years, with his final role as the general manager of customer service, managing shipping of customers’ orders. Kim Adkins, who in a few years would become the mayor of Martinsville, had just finished working for a year at , where she was the director of corporate communications. She left Tultex and on Jan. 18 would take over as new executive vice president for the MHC Chamber of Commerce, succeeding Larry Aydlett, who was retiring after 22 years.
